Daily briefing
Fresh downpours for Northwest

Another big atmospheric river event is spreading across the Northwest today, bringing a fresh deluge of rain. This will bring big changes to the northern Rockies and Plains, too. This is included in today's daily briefing published every weekday at 5 a.m. ET.

The WeatherRadar shows waves of heavy rain moving into the Northwest and northern California. Several inches of rain, along with recent rainfall, will increase the threat of flooding here. This is a warm system, so rain will fall across the Cascades, increasing snow melt.

As the system moves inland later today, heavy rain and mountain snow will spread into the Great Basin and northern Rockies. This will be accompanied by high winds. The WindRadar shows gusts in excess of 35 mph likely, which will spread across the northern Plains tonight.

East of the Rockies, the only trouble spot will be across Texas and the central Gulf Coast. A few showers and thunderstorms throughout the day, impacting Houston and New Orleans.

The TemperatureRadar shows a warm-up across many parts of the U.S. today as winter takes a bit of retreat northward. The 50s and 60s will be found as far north as the northern Plains and the Mid-Atlantic. The Southern Plains will be in the 60s, while Florida and southern California will be in the 70s.
